Brake Fluid:
Brake fluid is a hydraulic fluid used in braking systems. It’s usually made from glycol ethers or a mix of glycol and borate esters (DOT 3, 4, and 5.1 types). It’s non-compressible and transfers force when you press the brake pedal. DOT 5 is silicone-based and not compatible with other types. Brake fluid also contains corrosion inhibitors and stabilizers. It absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point and affects performance, so regular replacement is essential.
Power Steering Fluid:
Power steering fluid is a hydraulic oil that helps you steer with less effort. It’s usually mineral oil or synthetic ATF-based and includes friction modifiers, anti-wear agents, corrosion inhibitors, and seal conditioners. It keeps the power steering pump and rack lubricated and responsive. Different vehicles require specific fluid types—using the wrong one can damage the system. Always check the owner’s manual before topping up or replacing either fluid.
